    Ticketyboo

A few months ago, our inboxes were flooded with a forward so priceless we have vowed to never again junk a forward without opening it. We're talking about a dance video from Dorairaj Bhagawan's 1978 Kannada film Operation Diamond Rocket.

It opens on a dance floor with flashing lights and rotating chandeliers. Girls thrash about to braying trumpets and jazzy beats. Enter Kannada superstar Rajkumar in white bellbottoms, waistcoat and red bowtie. He sings: "If you come today, it's too early. If you come tomorrow, it's too late. You pick the time. Tick tick tick tick tick tick."

As he croons, Rajkumar flirts with the ladies present and displays some fancy footwork on a mirrored floor. After watching the video on repeat for about 50 times, you begin to wonder what lyricist C Udayashankar was thinking when he wrote the song.

The video has staggered a vast number of internet users. It jumped from inbox to inbox faster than a virus and has been viewed close to 9,000 times on the popular video sharing site youtube.com. The folks at Channel V were so tickled by it, they tracked down a tape of the film so they could air the video. In fact, the music channel declared the first of April this year World Tick Tick Day and played the video close to 30 times. Said Channel V programming head Luke Kenny: "It's not everyday you get to see something as quirky, a '60s kitsch kind of look." The video can cause harmful side effects such as painful stitches on the side and breathing difficulties. So be careful and don't eat while you're watching it.

  • Description: Web 2.0 in just under 5 minutes.

This is the 2nd draft, and I plan on doing one more final draft. Please leave comments on what could be changed or improved, or what needs to be excluded or included. Subscribe if you want to be notified when the revision is released.

UPDATE: I just added this video to Mojiti where you can actually write your comments into the video itself. It is an exciting experiment in "Video 2.0". Go check it out at http://mojiti.com/kan/2024/... and add your voice!

Transcripts are now available as well:
    http://mediatedcultures.net...

A couple of people have noted that the statement, "XML was created to do just that" (separate form from content) is misleading because CSS enables the same effect with HTML. I tried to integrate CSS into the video, but it ruined the flow. Perhaps in the next draft.

My statement on XML is based on the following from xml.com: "In order to appreciate XML, it is important to understand why it was created. XML was created so that richly structured documents could be used over the web. The only viable alternatives, HTML and SGML, are not practical for this purpose. HTML, as we've already discussed, comes bound with a set of semantics and does not provide arbitrary structure."

Thank you all for the comments. With your help the next draft will be cleaned up and hopefully free of factual errors.

A higher quality version is available for download here: http://www.mediafire.com/?6... Please note that this is the second draft and the final version will not be available until late February after I review all comments and revise the video. Please return for a new download link at that time.

The song is "There's Nothing Impossible" by Deus, available for free at http://www.jamendo.com/en/a...
Deus offers music under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial- ShareAlike 2.0 license, yet one more example of the interlinking of people sharing and collaborating this video is attempting to illustrate.

  • Description: Subbed Official Hellsing Ultimate OVA Trailer. I did not make this, I do not own a single frame of animation, I'm just sharing it. Also, I downloaded it from VeryFluffy.

The information they had added to the download in a notepad: --- VeryFluffy proudly presents --- +++ Hellsing Ultimate OVA DVD Trailer +++ Type: Trailer Source: Unknown DVDiso Length: 5:23 Size: ~45 MB Video codec: Nero Digital H.264 @ ~1800kbps Audio codec: Vorbis @ q4 Aspect ratio: 16:9
    Physical resolution: 720x480
Playback resolution: 873x480 Subtitles: English (SSA) ------------------------------ -------------------

Notes: What the heck? v2 for a 5-minute trailer? WHY?
Well, some people were complaining about suboptimal quality
and the lack of sign translations in the first trailer...
I myself wasn't completely satisfied with the video - as I
stated in the v1 info.txt, it was a quickie encode without
very much filtering at all. When I saw that another group
had released another version, I hoped that they would have
done the work for me so I could continue to be lazy, but
it seems that the powers that be doesn't like me. They
screwed up the aspect ratio totally, among other things...

So, this version fixes a lot of the evil blocking that was
present in the last version by applying liberal amounts of
smoothing. It also gets rid of some interlaced frames. Bitrate
is even more exaggerated than last time, but considering that
    a quant2 XviD is 85+ MB I don't think it's unrealistic. Looks
good, anyway... :P It still isn't perfect, but I won't succumb
to the insanity that is single-frame editing, at least not for
    this project.
Hope you like this version better than the last one... ;)

Some people are bound to complain about the lack of an
XviD-in-AVI version, but I'm not going to bother. MKV and h.264
is superior and I won't make lower-quality versions for people
too lazy to get the CCCP and a modest computer. Also, softsubbed
h.264 in MKV annoys the heck out of some very loudmouthed,
    AVI-pimping, moronic fansubbers, so it's a double win... ^^

For more information about the Hellsing OVA, visit the
    official homepage (japanese):
    http://www.geneon-ent.co.jp...
    or ANN's page (english):

For playback on Windows I recommend the CCCP, as always.

On *nix and MacOS X, go for mplayer. The subtitles won't look
    very pretty in it, though.

    - the translator (who also was one of the guys
complaining about the video quality in v1)
