  • Description: Access full lesson containing this video at: http://www.yourteacher.com/lesson_det... Students learn to convert a linear equation to slope-intercept, or y = mx + b form, by getting y by itself on the left side of the equation. For example, to convert the equation x -- 3y = -12 to y = mx + b form, the first step is to subtract x from both sides to get --3y = -x -- 12. Notice that the x term is positioned before the number on the right side of the equation so that the equation will eventually match up with y = mx + b form. Next, divide both sides by --3 to get y = 1/3 x + 4. Now the problem is in y = mx + b form, with m = 1/3 and b = 4, and the line can be graphed using the slope and y-intercept.

  • Description: This is little hobby of mine (but I haven't really done one for years) This proccess is not about originality (to be honest) but precision and being accurate. I choose a Picture (usually a screenshot as many animation cels are) and carefully graph it out. On average these pictures are no bigger than 8x6 inches or so just to give you an idea. Once the graph is finished, I copy the graph onto a serperate paper and carefully copy the image. I use a black and white reference and several others at differnt exposures for hard to see lines. Once the image is penciled out and I am satisfied it looks like the original I ink the sucker. WARNING!!! This is one of the most crucial stages!! If your drawing is not exact, the whole cel will turn out badly! After Inking, I scan the image and fix the ink in photoshop and get rid of grey tones and graph/pencil marks. I like to manually ink the images because it gives the impression of being handmade and makes the cel even more of a challenge! I print out a clean linework image and photocopy it onto a transparency. I find that the photocopy ink stays on better and that the photocopier handles the plastic well. Now be careful! Handle the plastic with clean hands always! I try to keep all of my references and pictures in a folder and keep the plastic between two papers so it doesn't damage. You will be painting on the BACK of the plastic...not on the side that was printed on. Paint shadows and highlights first and base colors last. Use Acrylic. Nothing else will work! You will have to do more than one coat of paint to fully cover the plastic...to check if it is thick enough, wait for the paint to dry and hold the cel over a white piece of paper-you will be able to see imperfections and blank spots easily. When you mess up CAREFULLY take a needle or safety pin and scratch away the unwanted paint. Also make sure your paint is fully mixed before you apply it or your cel will appear smudged and the colors will not be solid! Paint a background! I prefer watercolor because it is less saturated than the acrylic and doesn't take away from the final image. When Your done, attach the two together and mount or frame them. Be proud of yourself! These cels take a VERY long time to complete. You must have a lot of patience if you want them to look right. Skimping out on any step will degrate the cel! I've done a couple of my own designs, but I really prefer to do replications of others work as it poses more of a challenge! Good Luck with your cels!
