Description: Some people refer to this tornado, which roared through Dallas, Texas on April 2nd, 1957, as the "Great Dallas Tornado". 10 people were killed and around 200 were injured. According to NOAA, "A widely applicable and rapidly computed method for estimating the maximum tangential wind speed in a tornado" was recently developed. The method "requires knowledge of the cloud deck height and the descent distance of the funnel cloud tip (often available from still photographs). The method is applied to the Dallas tornado of April 2, 1957, and yields a maximum swirling speed of 209mph," which would peg this twister as an F4. Previous estimates based on viewing & studying this very footage originally put wind speeds at 170mph. So this twister was substantially more powerful than originally thought.
