  • Description: Just me, an interpreter, keeping a record of my life for 2007. All sign, all the time.
  • Description: Babysitting morals, paid vacation, and my first encounter with the Deaf community in WalMart.

    Transcript:
Hey. I have some stories to share with you. Yesterday I was babysitting three children, and the mother, whose children I have babysat for a long time, comes home (at about midnight), and asks me, "Leslie, you have watched my children for many years, and I trust you, and I plan on going on vacation this summer. How would like to come along and help me watch the kids? We're going to the Dominican Republic."
I was excited. I would absolutely love to go on vacation and get paid to watch the kids. Plus, that country speaks Spanish and I speak some Spanish. It'd be amazing! Anyways, now I need to try to talk my parents into allowing me to go. That will be hard, since my parents are dictators and don't allow me to have any fun. Today, they said I'm supposed be studying all day, but I'm really on the internet, pretending to be studying. Then, [this is back to when I was babysitting] I was watching some TV with the kids after we cooked our dinner together. We're watching the Disney Channel, and there's a show on TV where there is a boy and girl who are flirting, and then they kiss. The girl who I was babysitting sees this, and says, "Eww!" I look at her and say, "What's wrong with that? The boy's a cutie." She says, "But the boy's black!" I was shocked. I know she's a kid, but I'm not used to people who are racist. Anyways, that seemed kind of strange to me because her father, who died a few years ago, did not in the photos I saw of him seem to be white. So I'm trying to explain to the girl that what she saw was fine; people are the same. Just then the little boy, watching the kissing scene, exclaims, "Delicious!" That was funny. Haha. I love children most of the time.
So, today, I was walking through WalMart, buying my vegetarian food, searching for some beans, when I became shocked! I saw people signing! I go find my mother, show her how wonderful and amazing this is, and say, "I want you to go meet them with me. I'm shy." So I go up to them, wave my hand to get their attention, and greet them. We started signing, and it was just amazing because I finally got to meet some people from the Deaf community. There was an elderly man, who was 77, and his wife, and his daughter, who was hearing but knew how to sign. And then yet another person comes up to the group and starts signing! Well, thank you for watching. Later.

    Transcript:
Hello, hello, hello. I'm Leslie, and this my blog number three. Okay, well, I have a story. Today I went to a few places with my mother. The first place was the doctor's. So we're in the car, driving, driving, heading towards the doctor's, and my mother, while there happens to be torrential rains, looks down over at my hands, and bursts into the exclamation, "Wow, Leslie! Your hands are really small!" Me, frightened, scream, "Mom! You are driving! Pay attention to the road!" So, I'm still rather unpetrubed, relaxed, fine. Then, we enter the doctor's office, and we're in the waiting room, which is full of people, and my mom, speaking in a loud voice, "Wow, Leslie, let me see your tiny fingers!"
"No, mom! You're being crazy--stop embarrassing me!"
The next part is a lot worse. Second, we go clothes shopping. I have to buy a fancy dress for a party I'm going to tonight, along with some shoes. I'm standing in the shoe department, and take off my running shoes. My mom's standing over there (I indicate where), and looks at me, and says, with a look of overexagerrated disgust, "Oh! Leslie! Those shoes! They smell awful." Then she picks them up and sniffs them, feigning a cough. Curious people are starting to stare now. And my mother, "What's wrong with you? Don't you chew your shoes?" (Now I realize I used the sign 'chew' instead of clean. I laugh and correct myself.) Yet again she holds up the shoes and fakes a cough.
"Mom! Stop it!" I protest, but the onlookers continue to stare. I cower down in embarrasment.
Okay, so now, we're driving home, and the entire drive my mom is whining about the smell of my shoes. She is starting to really bother me; I'm becoming extremely angry, but nooo, she won't stop being rude. Then my dad enters the room, and I take off my shoes, and my mom starts her fake coughing routine again. And me, I can't control my emotions anymore--I finally start talking [I had been quiet, trying not to yell] (I accidently sign something profane instead, then correct myself), and well, I kinda cursed at my mother, and now I'm not even sure if I can go to my friend's party now. Sad. Well, what am I supposed to learn from this? I hope your day was better than mine. Later. Thanks for watching.

  • Description: My vent about how my ASL is being judged... especially by hearing people.

    ***

    Rough summary:
My ASL usually are picked on-- because I slipped and used some SEE/PSE signs... and it often happens to be from HEARING people who throw a tantrum "Omg, WHAT IS THAT?! ARE YOU SIGNING THAT WAY JUST BECAUSE I AM HEARING?! SHAME ON YOU!"...

Why? Why are they throwing a fit?
Because they see ASL as a "beautiful poetic language being done with gracefully hands"... (gagging). And also many of hearing people did take a REAL ASL CLASS-- academic and formal education.
So they always carry this "I KNOW ALL ABOUT ASL, AND YOU DON'T, PITY ON YOU, yOU LITTLE DEAF MAINSTREAMED KID!" wisp around them....

And I am sick of them. They are oppressing Deaf poeple if they look down on mainstreamed/oral/HoH/et cetera...
They are taking advantage of the fact that they HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE ASL-- and we the Deaf people didn't have the opportunity until, possibly in colleges-- or NEVER.

I recollected in my high school, I attempted to sign up for ASL but my teacher-for-deaf objected and claimed that I am too smart and already an expert on ASL.

So.. i had my opportunityt taken away.
Just like every other Deaf person who wants to polish up their ASL skills.
Just like you hearing people-- you do take English class just to polish up your ENlgish.

So.... if you are a hearie and you are a learner of ASL-- don't you dare mocking a Deaf person's signs. Don't you dare looking down at a Deaf person just because they were taught different signs. (And it is usually because of hearing poeple! GASP!)

So this is my little bitch session toward hearing interpreters, hearing ASL teachers, hearing ASL researchers and hearing CODAs who threw tantrums.
    Screw you.
I am Deaf. That is enough. I don't need to take your crap just because you went to a fancy school. At least I am LIVING it...

    ****
sorry about the quality of the video. THis is my worst video ever, so I give you my deepest apology for bad lighting, blurry signs, but I cannot even repeat my emotions so I decided to just go ahead with this video that I made weeks ago because for me, this video is RAW. And raw is good for you. :-)
  • Description: Barb DiGi shares her created flowchart of a true bilingual model in her series on "No ASL Left Behind" (NALB) based on the interactions of both languages that lead to a higher cognitive thinking level. Deaf students can learn direclty from written English with the support of ASL which is considered the most effective method. It is evident that there is a strong relationship between ASL and reading.
