Brushton-Moira Description: Schenectady Christian High School Basketball Regional Champions Semifinal at Potsdam State vs. Brushton-MoiraSchenectady Christian ousts Seton Catholic By: John Coryer Staff Writer March 11, 2007POTSDAM — Schenectady Christian had the answer for Seton Catholic Saturday. In fact, the Dragons had three answers for the Knights.Bryan Bishop, Jake Bowman and Matt McCarty combined for 53 points as the Section II champions defeated Seton Catholic, 60-50, in the NYSPHSAA Class C regional finals at Potsdam State. The win sends the Dragons (25-1 overall) into this weekend's Class C Final Four in Glens Falls.Bryan Bishop, a 6-2 guard, hurt the Knights from the outside with 22 points, including six three-pointers.Bowman and Matt McCarty, meanwhile, took turns working inside with 18 and 13 points, respectively.'Bishop can shoot it,' said Seton Catholic head coach Larry Converse. 'He didn't shoot well the night before in their win over Brushton-Moira, but he shot well today.'Bowman is a player, no question about it, and McCarty killed us inside.'The Schenectady Christian win overshadowed a strong performance by Seton Catholic senior Pat Murnane, who finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.'Pat brought his big dog game today,' Converse said. 'He played well.'But, they're the better team although they aren't any deeper than we are. I was proud of our kids. They didn't quit.'It started out pretty well for the Knights (13-11 overall) when Seton Catholic jumped out to an early 7-4 lead.Murnane tallied five of the points, including a three-point play where he was fouled while dunking the ball in transition. The Knights, however, went cold after that and the Dragons heated up.Schenectady Christian scored the next 13 points in the opening quarter, including six by Matt McCarty, before settling for a 17-9 advantage after one.'We started out good,' Converse said. 'But, then we took some untimely shots.'Seton Catholic stayed within striking distance of the Dragons in the second and cut its deficit to 27-21 late in the half on baskets by Jimmy Akey and Neal Kirby. The Dragons then worked the ball for the final shot of the half and Jared Kulbako nailed a three-pointer from the corner to give his team a nine-point lead — 30-21 — at the buzzer. It was Kulbako's only basket from the field in the game.'That was a big shot for them at the end of the half,' Converse said. 'Instead of us being down six, we end up being down by nine.'It was an uphill battle for the Knights the rest of the way.Seton Catholic, however, did go on a little run early in the third when Murnane hit two baskets and Kirby one to get to within six, at 35-29.Schenectady Christian was then able to stretch it out again while taking a 45-34 lead into the fourth.Bryan Bishop drilled two more three-pointers in the final stanza as the Dragons enjoyed their biggest lead of the game, at 59-42.But, the Knights didn't pack it in when Casey Loughan and Murnane hit three-pointers in the late going to bring the Knights back to 59-48.A free throw by Bowman and Akey's two-pointer then ended the scoring.Josh Davis finished with eight points and eight assists for Seton Catholic, while Loughan and Akey each chipped in with seven rebounds.'They play almost entirely man-to-man defense and we were able to get them out of that,' Converse said. 'That doesn't happen for them very often.'To get this far, I was happy with our kids. We turned our season around midway through when we starting playing as a unit. That's why we were able to win the sectional championship.'—Schen. Christian 60, Seton Catholic 50Schenectady Christian (60)Moore 0-2-2, Collins 0-0-0, Kulbako 1-2-5, J.
