Description: The Tyrone Guthrie Theatre opened on Vineland Place in Minneapolis in 1963. Its first home was an intriguing and elegant modernist building designed by architect Ralph Rapson. The stage was thrust forward, with seating on three sides - imagine a small indoor amphitheatre, with close-in sight lines and superb acoustics. What an amazing place to take in a play! It was also a great venue for concerts and other perfomances.The Guthrie Theatre company eventually outgrew this building and after years of plans and politics, they built another spectacular new building, designed by Jean Nouvel, on the downtown Minneapolis riverfront. The final curtain at their original home came down in May, 2006. Immediately thereafter the company decamped to their new digs, where they opened in June. The original building is now being demolished, to the utter dismay of some of us. What remained on Saturday afternoon, December 30, 2006 looked somewhat like the ruins of an ancient amphitheatre. This view is from Bryant Avenue looking east, with the site of the scene shops and rehearsal spaces in the foreground, the Walker Art Center in the background, Groveland Terrace on the right, and Vineland Place and the foggy downtown skyline on the left.

Description: The original Guthrie Theater building in Minneapolis was demolished recently. First the lobby shared with the adjacent Walker Art Center was slowly dismantled by hand, to avoid disrupting or damaging the Walker. Then the theater was demolished mainly by a large backhoe fitted with a huge hand-like device (which looks like an oven mitt) that could be used to cut pillars and beams as well as to grab, punch or pull things. There was no wrecking ball at all. The large mechanical hand is shown working on December 19, 2006. By then the work had progressed to the point where the damage was irreversible but a large part of the place was still intact. As painful as it was to see this theater destroyed I was nonetheless attracted to the spectacle, like a moth to a flame.I took this from Vineland Place; the Walker and the former shared lobby are at the left and the backstage area was on the right. Bryant Avenue is outside the right margin.
