Description: Chaplain Philip M. Hannan was assigned to the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division in December of 1944 shortly after the Battle of the Bulge began in the Ardennes Forest in Belgium. After the Battle of the Bulge Hannan and the 505th pushed on into Germany and eventually wound up in Cologne. Through negotiations with the German Archbishop of Cologne Chaplain Philip M. Hannan was made temporary pastor of the ancient Cologne Cathedral in order to protect the artwork and administer support to the troopers of the 505th. To this day, Archbishop Hannan is a revered member of the Cologne Cathedral.After the war Hannan returned to the United States and served the Catholic community in the Baltimore as Administrator Baltimore-Washington Archdiocese and was given the title of Monsignor in 1952. He remained in the Baltimore area until 1965 when Hurricane Betsy struck New Orleans. He moved to New Orleans immediately after Betsy inundated the city and was named Archbishop of the Diocese of New Orleans on September 29, 1965. He remained in that post until December 6, 1988. Archbishop Hannan now lives in retirement across Lake Ponchartrain from New Orleans in Covington, Louisiana.
