OHSU NCNM SCNM UBCNM Naturopathy Vitalism: Clusty (09-2007) 01. A metasearch at clusty.com {09-21-2007}, per - "of the life force" medicatrix .edu - reveals these four schools: 01.a. UB / UBCNM statements of essential naturopathy vitalism: 01.a.i. (at http://www.bridgeport.edu/ub/nm/Six_P... ): "Six guiding principles. Guiding principle #1. The healing power of nature. Viz [sp., vis] medicatrix naturae: the body has the inherent ability to establish, maintain, and restore health. The healing process is ordered and intelligent; nature heals through the response of the life force. The physician's role is to facilitate and augment this process." 01.a.ii. (at http://www.bridgeport.edu/ub/nm/Six_P... ): "Six guiding principles. Guiding principle # 3. First do no harm. Viz [sp., vis] primum no nocere: illiness [sp.] is a purposeful process of the organism. The process of healing includes the generation of symptoms which are, in fact, an expression of the life force attempting to heal itself" [...] "he physician's actions can support or antagonize the actions of he [sp., the] viz medicatrix naturae" [...] 01.b. OHSU (at http://content.ohsu.edu/nmhc/NMHCwhat... ): 01.b.i. Statement that naturopathic is essentially scientific and vitalistic: "What is naturopathic medicine? Naturopathic medicine is [...] a " [...] "science" [...] "naturopathic medicine is heir to the vitalistic tradition of medicine in the Western world" [...] "the practice of naturopathic medicine emerges from six principles of healing. These principles are based on the objective observation of the nature of health and disease and are examined continually in light of scientific analysis. These principles stand as distinguishing marks of the profession." 01.b.ii. Statement that naturopathy is essentially vitalistic:" [...] "nature heals through the response of the life force." 01.c. NCNM (at http://www.ncnm.edu/academics/naturop... ): 01.c.i. Statement that naturopathy is essentially scientific: "Principles of healing. The practice of naturopathic medicine emerges from six principles of healing. These principles are based on the objective observation of the nature of health and disease and are examined continually in light of scientific analysis [bullshit!]" [...] 01.c.ii. Statement that naturopathy is essentially vitalistic: "The healing power of nature -- vis medicatrix naturae [...] the healing process is ordered and intelligent; nature heals through the response of the life force" [...] "the process of healing includes the generation of symptoms, which are, in fact, expressions of the life force attempting to heal itself [...] the physician's actions can support or antagonize the actions of vis medicatrix naturae [...] the practice of promoting health through stimulation of the vital force." 01.d. SCNM (at http://www.scnm.edu/retired/natureMed... ): "the basic principles of naturopathic medicine: 'the healing power of nature.' The healing power of nature or vis medicatrix naturae [...] the healing process is ordered and intelligent; nature heals through the response of the life force" [...] Note: FNPLA's overarching essential naturopathy vitalism, that couches all federated AANMC AANP U.S. and Canada schools, is here http://www.fnpla.org/philosophy.htm . 02. A life force / 'purposeful life spirit' is as real as the Tooth Fairy. It is a figment. For an aggregation on the scientific ejection / nonscientific status of vitalism, visit http://novfsinscience.blogspot.com/ . Note: Scientific analysis dismisses naturopathy's vitalism, spiritism, teleology, and autoentheism as nonscientific. As medicine Nobel Laureate Joshua Lederberg states, "in fact, DNA research has brought an end to a long history of vitalistic speculation, namely the expectation that new principles transcending the existing framework of physics and chemistry would be needed to explain living phenomena." {NYT 1985}(see http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage... ). 03. It must be kept in mind that if vitalism is scientific, then science no longer requires evidence: then unevidenced 'purposeful life spirits' / figments are scientific. But science relies upon direct evidence, parsimonious explanation, peer-review, non-supernaturalism per methodological naturalism, and causalism instead of teleology. Naturopathy ignores the preponderant standards of science, and treats the label like a letterhead, on a blank page they then fill-up with whatever sectarian 'articles of faith' that they desire. But, I am not a sow at the trough of sectarian woo-woo. (for further enlightenment, visit http://standtoyourduty.blogspot.com ). (music by spaceScat, "catwok" excerpt).
