I've been struggling lately trying to grasp just what a given philosopher was wrestling with. Why did they do it? What was their purpose? Who was the intended audience? This quote which I got from a book I am presently reading called The Courtier And The Heretic: Leibniz, Spinoza and the Fate of God in the Modern World really, really helps me find a way to approach my extra curricular readings of the Western philosophers.To read the philosophies as memoir, an intellectual memoir makes their writings so much clearer. I am peering into the mind of an actual man. It is not simply philosophical prose but someone like myself who is wrestling with the perennial problems of existence. I am very excited!!! I have found a key to unlocking the philosophers!!Happy New Years...
