Happy Birthday Dad!!!
Ok, heres the story. We took my dad to the Chelsea-Wakefield steam train for his birthday. My father has always had a thing for trains, probably due to the fact that his father worked as a conductor for many years when my dad was a boy, and he passed this passion for all things train on to me when I was quite young myself. The train takes you on a 1.5 hr trip up to the town of Wakefield. We had lunch and took quite a few pictures, and did some shopping in this small town. Afterwards the train takes you back to Chelsea. At both ends of the trip they must turn the locomotive around using a turntable. The one in Wakefield is a manual one (one of the last apparently) and the one back in Chelsea is a motorized one. Most people got off the train and went home, but a few straglers stuck around to check out the procedure. My parents wander off somewhere, while my hot photographer girlfriend and I went looking for the turntable they were going to use to turn the locomotive around. So while they were uncoupling it from the passenger cars and switching tracks we walked off and found the turntable on the other side of the parked passenger cars. No-one else followed, and the cars were between them and the turntable, so no-one could see what was going on but us. They backed it up, switched tracks and started heading for the turntable. As they pass beside us one of the engineers leans out and asks us if we want to come aboard. I didnt waste a second and climbed that ladder in the blink of an eye. They had planned on stopping to pick us up, but I never gave them a chance. My girlfriend was a close second up the ladder, and once she was aboard they got the train moving again. So not only did we experience a ride in a steam locomotive, but we also got a spin on the turntable at the same time. Once they were facing the right way they sped off to go switch tracks one last time and take the engine into the shed. As we come out from behind the parked passenger cars I spotted my parents looking around for us. It didnt take my dad long to notice us waving out of the locomotive's small windows, and I'll never forget the look on his face as he tried to figure out how I had gotten on board. I would have given anything to have had him there with me, but there wasnt time to go and find him when the engineers asked us if we wanted to join them aboard. So instead I filmed the whole thing and I'm putting it up here for him to see. Thanks for sharing your love of trains with me dad. Hope your enjoyed your day.I'd also like to thank the 2 kindest engineers I've ever met. They had seen us wandering around the train all day and decided to invite us to get a closer look at what they do everyday. It was much apreciated.
