While water is indispensable to a plant's life, too much or too little of it can be harmful and even deadly. To cope with this, plants have developed various adaptations. From a waxy cuticle to underground storage and from seeds to fungus, these adopted mechanisms keep plants healthy on the outside while maintaining homeostasis within. Our video explains both the adaptations themselves and how they benefit the plant overall. It shows how reduced leaves minimize the amount of water lost during photosynthesis and how mychorrizhae has formed a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and plant, profiting both parties simultaneously. Our video goes on to describe how having a waxy cuticle maintains the amount of water in a leaf by controlling how much gets in and out and how epyphetic plants are able to thrive in places other than on land. By watching this video, one can deduce how succulent plants have leaves that are comprised of water storing tissue and how land plants without roots (such as ferns and Spanish moss) can grow without being dug into the soil. We explain how underground storage accumulates water for long dry periods, keeping the plant alive even during the harshest conditions. All of these adaptations combine to show how essential water is for a plant along with how far various types of plant life have in creating ¬effective ways in obtaining and conserving it respectively. The plants we studied in lab have found ways to change the problem of water retention into a functioning aspect of everyday life.
