The first half is of the synthesis, deflagration and detonation of nitroglycerin, and the second half is of the synthesis and detonation of nitrogen triiodide.Nitroglycerin is an extremely powerful high explosive, and is only moderately sensitive to shock. A hit with a hammer might not detonate it unless it is hit hard. It only burns when heated, and must be given a shock to detonate.Nitrogen triiodide is incredibly sensitive, and can be detonated by a gust of wind - or even by the very act of drying. It never just burns - even the heat of a hot day can detonate it. In this video I detonate it with a feather. It decomposes into nitrogen and elemental iodine, which is the violet-colored smoke.
