When Nicky was young, people described him as very energetic, mischievous, and good at athletics. Consequently Nicky participated in Judo and Tae Kwon Do. His hard working efforts in these two sports earned him three black belts in Judo and five black belts in Tae Kwon Do. Moreover Nicky was the provincial Taiwanese Tae Kwon Do champion for three consecutive years. It seemed like Nicky's career as an athlete was inevitable until a chance of stardom struck upon him.Furthermore, the multi-talented Nicky also earned awards in calligraphy, drawing, swimming, and essay-writing. Throughout the years, he was able to maintain in the top three of his class in terms of academics.Rise to StardomIn 1988, when Nicky was 17, he was spotted by an entertainment agent while working on a part time job. He was told to audition for the boyband Little Tigers Team. Initially Nicky refused, for he was more focused on developing his career as an athlete, but eventually they persuaded him to do so. As a result, Nicky was chosen along with two others, Alec Su and Julian Chen, to be a part of the Little Tigers Team.
