The Darkness : Hot FuzzDef Poetry - Season 4, Episode
Right, so the dance (original version here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S0BlK... )was put into our end of year show, and the following video was taken on the last night of said show. This version is only changed a little, but I feel like I should respond to some of the comments left on the original version...This dance was essentially a competition piece, and as such it was a success.I realize that being a great dancer is not all about tricks, or showing flexibility (even be it with ones better leg...) but for a competition, it would be idiotic of me to have either used my less facilitated leg to hit a line, which looks better on the right, or to have replaced an impressive section with twenty seconds of stationary choreography. (Working, as I was, to a time limit)In the original choreography, there was a lot more emotion, there was a lot more 'story telling' but alot of that was ripped out for the final version in favor of more entertaining, less self involved choreography. As for the back handsprings... you've got me... I am no gymnast, but unless you are a gymnast yourself, you will be aware that to an untrained eye, they are quite pleasing. The 'running', which a few people took umbrage with, is one of the only remaining features of the dance as it was when it was a more emotive piece... full of loss, and looking for a means of escape... because it matters to me, it remained in the final piece.I think nowadays, especially with some forms of contemporary dance, dancers and choreographers can become wrapped up in their own world, and so self involved that the meaning of dance as a performance art is lost into some self indulgent cathartic therapy... which is fine for the studio, but completely un-accesable for the audience. And it is the audience that, at the end of the day, pay to keep you dancing. Not that I would want to see dance dumbed down even to the level that this one was. I think self expression is extremely important... but so is being able to entertain, and so is the ability to move a spectator... That is what I was trying to do here.Jesus, that was a ridiculous rant... I'll probably hop back online in a few minutes and delete it, because lets face it, that was just me bitching about people who don't like the dance! but its an extremely subjective business, so form your own opinions guys... I hope you enjoy)Also (last thing I promise) this is the last night of the show... tired and ragged from doing this and the rest of the shows for two weeks, my technique is a little the worse for wear... I am sure no allowances will be made, but I give you this disclaimer none the less:)
