El largometraje Madre India(Bharat Mata, 1957), de Mebhoob Khan, describe la lucha de una mujer por reconciliar los valores tradicionales y la vida de la aldea con las corrientes de modernidad que comienza a percibir. Este filme fue un éxito internacional, consiguió el reconocimiento en Asia, África, Europa y América, siendo además una de las pocas películas indias nominadas a un Oscar. Mebhoob Khan, uno de los primeros directores indios que utilizó el color, había trabajado en películas históricas a escala épica y esa experiencia le ayudó a recrear con realismo la vida de un pueblo y su evolución. Madre India, con un poderoso argumento que sigue a la heroína desde su matrimonio hasta la edad adulta, está llena de referencias mitológicas : los nombres de los personajes están asociados a figuras muy importantes del panteón hindú. Cabe destacar la música del film, una mezcla de canciones populares y ragas(melodías) clásicos al estilo occidental compuesta por Naushad Ali.
