Rilke Song (Just Take the Emptiness) - Original Song
Another composition from the attic (not literally; I recorded it in the closet, not the attic). A weary performance, but perhaps appropriate to the material, feeble vocals and all. I wrote this after reading the first Duino Elegy by Rainer Maria RIlke. I couldn't have claimed to have understood it then (or perhaps even now), but I was moved by the tone and the images. Those of you familiar with it will recognize the references, if not the place I take them to.If you'd like to hear more of my original songs, explore my "Paul's Originals" playlist.Just Take the Emptiness (After Rilke)By Paul SonnenbergVerse:If I were to cry out, who would hear me?Surely not you, and surely not the angels; And even if an angel came down to hold me to herSurely I'd be crushed beneath her wings...Every creature knows that we are not at home hereAs we rush to shape the world to our design.Do the angels know that we are on our own hereSearching for something we never find?Verse:If I were to walk out among the birchesAnd listen to the song they whisper in the nightWould I hear my name thereOr just a language that I could never hope to understand?Chorus:If I could just take the emptiness I hold within my armsAnd cast it to the wind, Perhaps the birds would fly with more affectionJust take the loneliness I carry in my heartAnd let it go...Let it go...Verse:If I were to tell you the dreams that haunt meWould you understand, or turn and leave me shattered? And even if you heard me, what could you tell me?For you as just as blind as I am blind.Every creature knows that we are not at home hereAs we rush to shape the world to our design.Do the angels know that we are on our own hereSearching for something we'll never find?Chorus:If we could just take the emptiness we hold within our armsAnd cast it to the wind, Perhaps the birds would fly with more affectionJust take the loneliness we carry in our heartsAnd let it go...Let it go.Bridge: You're not an angel, you're not a spirit in the nightBut you can touch me...Why don't you touch me?ChorusJust take the emptiness you hold within your armsAnd cast it to the wind, Perhaps the birds will fly with more affectionJust take the loneliness you carry in your heartAnd let it go...Let it go.
