Joe Brotherton, a San Francisco artist, was born a cowboy in Montana, and educated at the University of Washington as a journalist. His artwork has a diverse range of styles, varying from Asian calligraphy through figurative works to abstract impressionism. Prominent in the San Francisco art community, he has helped secure the Avery Brundage Collection for the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, and later helped aquire the Harry Packard Collection for the Japanese Art Wing of New York's MET Museum. Additionally, he has hosted art shows on local TV programming, most notably "Art in Your Life." A prominent figure in the San Francisco Rennaisance, he associated with luminaries such as Alan Watts and DeKooning.
