Milton Brown - A Winner Never Quits
I met Milton in 1986 while producing an act for MCA of three American black girls called Dark Secret, on a song called "Liar Liar Liar", One of the girls (I can't remember her name now, but I think it was Sharon), was Milton's wife and he came down to the recording sessions, at Hans Zimmer's studio, Lillie Yard, and hung around, and sang for me, and asked if I'd make a record on him. He came from Atlanta , Georgia, and had obviously moved over here with his wife. So I recorded two singles with him for the Nightmare label, which was in its infancy at the time, in 1986. The first single was "Falling From A Great Height", a title which greatly amused my friend Damon Rochfort, who now writes for Coronation Street, and he still never fails to bring it up amidst fits of laughter, every time we go out and have dinner. This song, "A Winner Never Quits", was his second single, and the one he performed at Heaven at the famous "A Nightmare On Villiers Street" night in 1987. Milton had a great voice and in retrospect I wish I'd done some proper soul with him, as his voice seems wrong for the happy "tweeness" of these two singles, and he should have been singing classic Motown. I wonder if he still lives in England or if he returned to the States. Last I heard, he and his wife had split up anyway, so we all simply lost touch.
