There were three more Harbour Seal Pups released back into the Atlantic Sea. On Sunday 14th of October, the Irish Seal Sanctuary were in Mullaghmore, Co. Sligo to release Stella, Tuttu and Doby. Sebastian and Belle where on course to be released this weekend but didn't reach the weight requirement but Tuttu and Doby had so the decision was made that they be release instead. Having sufficient weight on their bodies at the time of release is very important for their future survival. There was good Irish weather with the sky overcast and slight dizzle but everyone was in high spirits as the community of Mullaghmore arrived. We were delighted to see them arrive and we had the opportunity to chat them prior to the release. As the release time came, we began the countdown and Stella, Tuttu and Doby bolted for freedom towards the sea. They moved fast towards the sea at first but then decided to come ashore again to everyones amusement. As the crowd decipated, a few die hards and volunteers watched on for another while as they stayed close to the shore and moved in among the shallow water. Eventually they moved away towards deeper waters. It takes a while for them to get a sense of their new home.Thank you to all those who attended and joined in on the day and supported and donated to our work. Thank you also to the volunteers and their efforts and to Phil and Tina at Sligo SPCA for their support and bunk beds! This seal release was also a special one as it was the last for our volunteer Alice who has been with the Sanctuary for the last 3 months and will be returning home to England on Wednesday 17th. She is continuing her volunteering experience in Norfolk Seal Sanctuary in the coming months. The Irish Seal Sanctuary wish her the best of luck and thank her for all her dedication, relentless hard work and friendship.
