Although I don't consider myself much of a video-editing mastermind, I had a concept for this Emery video so I thought I would take a shot at it. Let me give you a brief rundown on the concept I have for this video. Music, along with other art forms, are most often windows into the soul of what the artist believes and holds to be most valuable in life. This is definitely true of Emery. Their lyrics run deep with the view that they have of this world that we live in. "So Cold I Could See My Breath" is most definitely a song that comes from the heart of the members in Emery. I wanted to keep their concept the same in this video. Emery is obviously making a statement about Love in this song. What is love? I won't speak for Emery on what they think, but from the song I would imagine it is close to my idea of what love should be. I am a Christian (I would rather be called a follower of Christ because that's what I try to do). In our culture love, passion, lust, and sex are words used interchangeably. But is this a true portrayal of love? I would say that it is not. Love in not sex, not passion and definitely not lust. True, sex may have a part in a love relationship, but not until its appropriate time. Love has to be so much more than physical attraction and sex. Those things are just superficial. They might not be altogether bad but they are when they become the soul focus of our lives. That is just lust. Beliefs aside, no person can deny the pain, hurt, suffering, sense of loss, etc. that we feel when we give another person our heart, and maybe even body, and then it ends up being nothing. Those memories are always with us and, even if we wont admit it, they play in our minds over again when something in life reminds us of that person. We long for something real and lasting and meaningful. Like a painting we try to create what works best for us. Often times we give ourselves to short-term pleasures because our culture pumps us with the idea that we should live for the moment. Maybe if we could step outside of our selfish little worlds for a while and realize that our lives directly affect others. Maybe then we could see that the most precious and beautiful things in life, like love and marriage and sex and relationships, would be so much better if we practiced a love not based on what serves our needs but what helps and serves others. Emery also throws, what I see to be, and twist for our brothers and sisters in Christ. They sing about the "boys and girls" who have all the answers for the world; however, "the ambiguity shows..." So just another thought for my siblings in Christ, live what you claim to believe. If you tell the world to practice unselfish love, then you better be doing the same thing. Maybe if we would all take extra care to honor the name of Christ in how we live then we could reclaim respect for the word Christian. I hope that whoever reads this realizes that my heart and soul went into this video. I put a lot of thought and work into it. It might not be the most awesome display of video editing capabilities, (recorded with the nicest home video camera I could get my hands on and iMovie) but it is one created from love for this world that I live in. I hope this video touches everyone who watches and maybe lets you think a little more deeply about love. For those of you out there who have failed at love and life (don't worry we all have) remember that forgiveness and real love is readily available to you. You just have to ask.
