de·us ex ma·chi·na1 : a god introduced by means of a crane in ancient Greek and Roman drama to decide the final outcome2 : a person or thing (as in fiction or drama) that appears or is introduced suddenly and unexpectedly and provides a contrived solution to an apparently insoluble difficultyThis is the first in a series of short silent films put to music set in nature. 'Deux Ex Machina' which loosely translates from Latin as 'God from Machine' is the title for this series. I think this is an appropriate title because nature is what God has created and I have captured it on my digital camera (the machine). Just a forewarning about the quality of this video: No, it wasn't shot on an actual video camera and the video you see is Quicktime video (MOV) converted to the common Microsoft video format (AVI) and then layered with music and edited in Windows Movie Maker for the final product. That is just the way my camera shoots video, so do not criticize it on quality of conversion because it looks excellent on the camera playback, but horrible after it is ported. It was also early in the evening (about 7:30), so that would explain why it is so dark. I just didn't have good lighting. Maybe next time I'll shoot earlier or find a decent portable light source. It is also an amateur attempt to create an independent short form video like many at the Sundance film festival might enjoy. At best, I would say it fits some of the criteria to make it a 'Dogme 95' avant-garde film. Some of my future projects may include real sound but only if I bring my mp3 player that records WAV sound along and shoot the sound simultaneously with the video (as my camera can only shoot motion picture).Enough of the technical mumbo-jumbo, on to the director's explanation of the meaning behind the video.Yes, the title is 'Deux Ex Machina Vol. I', but what does that mean to me? This video describes the feeling of a lucid dream. A dream in which you feel like you are actually there and interacting with your surroundings. That is why this video was shot from Point of View. The actual 'deux ex machina' described in the title is one's awakening (the device) from this dreamland. That is why you will notice me running away at the end. That is my awakening. The song I chose for this film was 'Isobel' by one of my favorite artists, Björk. I love her music and whenever I listen to it I feel like I am being transported to another world of relaxation and happiness. The song 'Isobel' is about a girl by the same name who was born of and raised by the forest and is suddenly startled by her changing surroundings filled with modern amenities such as cities, buildings, and factories spewing filth into the sky. She is surprised and scared because it is unlike anything she has ever seen before. I think the song is appropriate because it describes the feeling of the dream scape and the harsh reality of awakening to the modern world. As I draw to a close, I hope that everyone enjoys 'Deux Ex Machina Vol. I' and I hope that everyone will stay tuned for its inevitable sequel as well as other projects I plan to make in the future.Thank you for watching!Lates,Andy ^_^COMMENTS AND CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM ARE WELCOME AND HIGHLY APPRECIATED.(C)2007 AWW PRODUCTIONS.
