Well, like I said in my third vlog, I was bored during my holiday. I rested, read, and met with friends. But I also went on the internet a lot! I decided to go ahead and start my own vlog. Because of that, I became very absorbed by YouTube... I joined a long time ago, but I never really used it because I did not bother to look for subtitled videos, I thought it was too hard and a time waster. But when I started vlogging, I explored YouTube and found A LOT of ASL vlogs! I heard that there were many vlogs out there, but I did not realise the sheer number! Now, I am always looking for cool vloggers.I am sure I won't have much time to look through Youtube when I am back at school and busy. But I am taking advantage of my free time NOW to add good vlogs to my subscription page. It will save me lots of time searching through all the vlogs. I discovered a cool feature of the subscription page... I can subscribe to "tags." I added tags such as "ASL," "Deaf" & ALSO, "english subtitles." This helps me find subtitled YouTube videos. Some of those aren't my bag, but there are still a lot of interesting ones.ANYWAY, I will stop blabbing on and get to the entire point of this vlog--"Should sign language vloggers subtitle their videos?" I am sure that many you Deaf, like myself, always have a hard time finding videos online that are subtitled. The hearing world has easy access to all content in their own spoken language; while we, the Deaf, have to endure "daily rapefests," as a friend of mine would put it, as we pursue subtitled media on the internet.During my recent exploits on YouTube I discovered that there are videos in MANY different languages on YouTube, and of course sign language is among them. I have found vlogs in several different sign languages--French, Spanish, BSL and so forth. The question is, do we who vlog in sign language have a unique obligation to subtitle our videos? Should we ALL strive to subtitle our sign language videos?Often, I am tempted to ignore the non-signers who might want to watch the video, as a way of telling them, "Up yours! Deaf people have faced communication barriers since FOREVER! It's YOUR turn! Learn ASL!" But is that attitude productive? I think it will not help hearing people, and nonsigners, learn about us or understand us. I think it further insulates us and cuts us off from the hearing world.
