Nobel Laureate in economics Professor Thomas Schelling says the problem of global warming cannot be solved without US cooperation. He made the remark at a speech he delivered on management of global warming at Tehran's Sharif University of Technology. The US, as the largest emitter of carbon dioxide worldwide, has not yet ratified the Kyoto Protocol which aims to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions.Schelling expressed his disappointment at lack of serious endeavors on the part of US President George W. Bush toward enforcing the Kyoto Protocol.Global warming might have minimal effects on some countries, but greatly affects developing nations whose gross domestic product (GDP) depends largely on agriculture, he noted.Sharif University of Technology in Tehran invited Dr. Schelling, professor emeritus of the University of Maryland, as one of its guest speakers this year.He received the special recognition and the highest scientific and research honors from the university's chancellor Dr. Saeed Sohrabpour. In 2005, Schelling was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics. He has published extensively on matters of environmental management, climate change, energy policy, foreign aid and international trade.
