Counting aids such as the abacus were being used in the 4th century - and as Arabic numerals spread to Europe - concepts like zero fractions and fixed places for tens, hundreds, and thousands greatly simplified mathematics - creating the original bits and bytes.In 1941 Konrad Zuse, a German engineer, completed the first general purpose programmable calculator. This lead to UNIVAC - the original Universal Automatic Computer.In April of 1964, The IBM 360 was introduced and quickly became the standard mainframe computer. By the mid-80s the 360 and its descendents had generated more than $100 billion dollars.Bill Gates and Paul Allen formed Traf-O-Data in 1971 to sell their computer traffic-analysis systems -- and at the same time Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak were building and selling "blue boxes" in Southern California.
