Axis forces surrendered 250,000 -- 275,000 troops on May 13, 1943The Africa Korps in Egypt had been preparing for the General Montgomery's attack near El Alamein for months. On October 23, 1942 the British 8th Army launched a massive attack against the German and Italian lines(Operation " Lightfoot "). The British offensive was launched with : 1,000 artillery pieces, 1,100 tanks, 750 aircraft and 220,000 men. The German and Italian's well prepared, and mined defensive lines, counted on ½ the British strength. The German and Italians held, despite the temporary transfer of Field Marshall Rommel to Germany for heath issues. On November 5th, 1942 8th Army had broken through the Panzer Army Africa's line. Field Marshall Rommel had no opinion, but to withdraw.On November 11, 1942 a combined British and American force landed in French North Africa. Vichy French forces offered mostly light resistance (Operation "Torch"). The Allies main goal; was to encircle Panzer Army Africa in Libya, and destroy it. Hitler and OKW assembled an emergency force to counter the Allies move. What was later named the 5th Panzer Army prepared defenses and awaited Panzer Army Afrika's retreat to Tunisia.In perhaps the most famous battle of the Tunisian campaign Rommel launched an attack on the American 2nd Corps. The battle of Kasserine Pass was a disaster for the U.S. 2nd Corps. General Fredendall was relieved of his command. The Battle of Tunisia was a series of tough battles for the Allied Forces. American forces engaged the German Army for the first time. Many American units gained battle experience for future campaigns.German and Italian forces surrendered on May 13, 1943.
