West Coast Storm January 4, 2008
Aside from a few Northeasters from the 70s to the 90s, and being caught in the '79 Hartford tornado, this is the worst thing I have ever driven through. If you look at the pavement, you can see the water swirling around. Pump up the volume to hear the wind buffeting the car, sometimes slowing my forward progress. It seemed far worse at the time than this video shows. I am crossing the western span of the Bay Bridge after 10am, crawling along at under 20mph. I had very sore hands, arms, and shoulders from gripping the wheel to keep the car on the road.I was out in this because I had to complete a rescue mission. What should have taken under an hour ended up being a four hour, round-trip trek between Oakland and SFO to pick up friends who arrived inexplicably early on a flight from Denver during the height of the storm.Winds were gusting near 100mph, sustained winds near hurricane force. (I wanna know--how did they ever land?!) They arrived just as most flights were suspended. Not pictured (unfortunately) are the crumpled street and highway signs, the multitude of trees, and volumes of unidentified debris that was flying around on all the surface highways during most of my drive. Pity. I was alone and did have to drive safely, with both hands, so I couldn't take many vids or even pics of the swirling debris.
