The flight was prepared since August 2006 when another large solar balloon was launched at low altitude in a captive flight. In the same time a special build parachute was was intensely tested. Mission1 was launched on December 2, 2006 at 12:47 local time. On Mission1 flight the solar balloon (probably the largest of this type ever build) transported the reserve crew cabin of the Stabilo system to an altitude of 14.700m. The launch and recovery worked as predicted. The desired altitude was lower due to extreme turbulences encountered during the last phase of the flight. In this situation the team didn't wanted to risk to damage the system. Mission1 flight demonstrated ARCA's capability to transport and safely recover a heavy vehicle, from above 85% of the Earth atmosphere. The event was broadcast live as around 20 journalists participated at the event.Credits: ARCA (Aeronautics and Cosmonautics Romanian Association)
