Orquesta Demon's Jazz - Kosmópolis (Dotras Vila & Demon
Continuing my Spanish series, I'm presenting here an atypical zarzuela, strangely subtitled "en forma de magazine musical circense" (zarzuela in the form of a circus musical magazine, whatever this may be). This work, premiered in 1928, is set in a cabaret and features an interesting mix of zarzuela, cabaret, jazz and dance band music. It was composed by Lorenzo Torres Nin (first photograph, aka Demon, well-known Spanish bandleader of the Orquesta Demon's Jazz interpreting this selection) and Juan Dotras Vila (second picture). The latter (1900-1978) is a lesser known composer and pedagogue. He wrote several zarzuelas and operettas, piano and orchestra pieces and songs, as well as popular tunes and film scores. This recording was made for Gramófono in 1928.
