The Boy Just Went Home From School and Shot Himself.
The boy just went home from school and fatally shot himself. He was 14-years old. The student was truant because he was protesting (political), "instead of attending school." The Vice Principal threatened him with jail time ("forever"). He got the student, Anthony Soltero, really upset. He went home and fatally shot himself with the rifle his stepfather had left out.Why is a child truant? They are often having a troubled life or school becomes a negative and "boring," experience. If you went to a restaurant to eat and that night you got sick and vomited, would you want to eat again at that restaurant? Let's say society keeps forcing you to eat at the same restaurant time after time, and your symptoms keep getting worse, at some point you are going to rebel; after all, the food is only hurting you.Students are often taught in a manner that is not effective, and they are given homework they don't understand. Later they fail a test. How does this affect their self-esteem? Half of all blacks and Latinos fail to complete high school. What is the point of teaching you the equation 5X + 1 = 11? Is this useful? X here has to be 2. Half of all kids fail algebra. For the last 40 years, the other half has passed with a C or better.I often ask inner city high school graduates what is l/2 + l/4? They usually cannot answer me. I then reach into their brain, and I tell them that they actually know the answer. I ask the students as to how many quarters are there in half a dollar. They quickly say 2. I then teach them that l/4 is one quarter or 25 cents out 100 cents (1 dollar). Then the kids readily say to me that l/2 + l/4 is ¾'s. I explain that 1/2 is equal to 2/4's.Except zero, any number divided by itself is one. By using a simple calculator, you do some diving. 2 divided by 2, 4 divided by 4, 10 divided by l0, and so on all equal one. Thus, now you know that 2/2 = 4/4 = l0/10 = 1. So one can say that if A is equal to B; B is equal to C; therefore, A is equal to C.I show kids many tricks, and I teach them about the magic of Pi. I then go on to grammar, and I ask the kids about a sentence. "The freeway ends there." "The" is the article, "freeway" is the noun, and "ends" is the verb. "There" is the adverb. In England they use the article, "the", less often, and I have been told that it does not exist in Russian. I then ask them to give me a noun. They often seem confused, though they already may have finished high school. I tell that about the noun, house. I then ask them to tell me things about the house, like color, size, or other adjectives. What is 0 divided by 1? They usually say zero. That's right. I then ask; what is 1 divided by zero. They usually say zero again. Then I explain that the two questions are mutually exclusive and that 1 divided by zero is extremely fascinating. If you have one apple and you share it equally with one of your friends, each one gets l/2 an apple. If you divide 1 apple into tiny pieces, let's say .0000000001 weight fragments, then the number becomes large. So one can say that if 1 is divided by zero (denominator; lower number), the result is infinity. We can write this in algebraic ways by saying that Y = l/X, as X approaches zero, Y approaches infinity. "How many dimensions are there?" The answer is 4, and these are Length (X), Height (Y), Depth (Z), and Time. What happens to time if one travels at the speed of light? Does it slow down?I have asked people with actual college degrees as to, "What is light's mass." They simply say, zero. Mass is zero because light has no inertia. However, light has mass-energy. If light had inertial, life would not be possible. For instance, an apple tree would use light, water, and carbon dioxide to give you the fruit. According to one estimate, it takes 100 units of apple-energy for the tree to yield one apple.Do neutrinos have a mass? They used to think they didn't so they could only find three. Later, it was determined that they travel just below the speed of light, oscillate, and they do have a mass (very tiny). With this new thinking, we found the other neutrinos. How many are there? In flash photography, the shutter speed is l/60 (of a second). It is not a very long time, but you get a great picture, usually. But if we think about it and realize that light travels at about 183,000 miles per second, then in l/60th of a second gives you a stream of photons that is 3050 miles long.On the moon, you cannot hear a radio. Sound waves require air. Sound does not travel in a vacuum. Rock and Roll music that was aired (electromagnetic waves) in the year 1960 may today be heard by a person with a radio living on a planet like earth that is 47 light years away. In conclusion, knowledge is extremely fascinating, but it is the messengers are often failing many of you. Schools must be safe!Luis Lomeli MD/Beta Format
