OMAHA, Neb. -- A mother said she discovered that her 7-year-old daughter's identity had been stolen when a case worker said the girl had earned thousands of dollars last year -- and KETV NewsWatch 7 talked to the man who admitted using the girl's Social Security card.Diane Snider said her daughter's case worker with the Nebraska Health and Human Services Department used software to track her family's earnings. The computer found that Snider's daughter's Social Security number had earnings from a job her daughter doesn't hold."Breana is just 7 years old and doesn't have a job," Snider said.Breana's Social Security number was being used by Carlos Gonzalez, records showed, and Gonzalez worked on jobs at two local construction companies. Both companies said that Gonzalez gave them the number and there was no reason to suspect it wasn't legitimateConfronted by KETV NewsWatch 7 investigator Kristi Andersen, Gonzalez admitted to using the number and said he had bought it for $40 on 24th Street in south Omaha.How Breana's number got on the street remains a question.The Social Security Administration said it has seen this type of fraud before and takes it seriously. The U.S. Attorney's Office for Nebraska said the office is cracking down on those who use fraudulent Social Security numbers.Snider said she'll have to track her daughter's credit history forever.Gonzalez's current employer said he is no longer working for them.Social Security Administration's Response, TipsIn 2006, the Office of Inspector General received a total of 103,287 allegations of fraud. Of this total, 10,688 (over 10 percent) were allegations of SSN misuse. If someone else may be using your SSN for work purposes, what should you do? You can determine if someone is using your Social Security number for work purposes by requesting a Social Security Statement, which contains a record of the earnings on which you have paid Social Security taxes during your working years. If you find that earnings have been posted to your record that do not belong to you, re-contact Social Security to have the earnings removed. Request a statement online at www.socialsecurity.gov or call 800-772-1213. The Social Security Administration cannot place a fraud alert on your SSN.If you suspect that someone is using your number, you should report it to the SSA Fraud Hotline by at 800-269-0271 or via e-mail at: OIG.Hotline@ssa.gov.
